What Is Naturopathy?

4 min read

Naturopathy is a holistic, evidence-informed approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of illness, rather than simply managing symptoms. It recognises that the body has an innate ability to heal when given the right support, and uses personalised treatment plans to optimise health and wellbeing.

A naturopath considers the whole person, taking into account physical symptoms, nutrition, lifestyle, stress, sleep, movement, environment, and medical history to understand how these factors influence overall health. Treatment may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, and education to support the body's natural healing processes.

There are six core principles that guide naturopathic practice:

First Do No Harm

The Healing Power of Nature

Identify and Treat the Causes

Treat the Whole Person

Doctor As Teacher

Prevention

First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)

This principle is about using the least invasive, lowest-force approach possible when supporting a client, whether that's through supplements, herbal medicine, or lifestyle change. Where possible, we aim to avoid simply suppressing symptoms, & instead work with the body rather than against it.

The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

This principle holds two truths together: that nature itself has an incredible capacity to heal, and that our own bodies carry that same innate intelligence. Think about a cut on your skin, your body already knows how to respond, forming a scab and repairing the tissue without you having to tell it how. Naturopathic care often works by removing obstacles to health, so the body's natural ability to heal can do what it already knows how to do.

I personally believe everything we need to heal is given to us by the universe, and the plants we have access to are incredibly powerful. Even being around nature has an ability to heal like that feeling you get swimming in the ocean, on a bush walk, or planting your feet in the earth. Nature is so incredibly powerful.

Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)

There is always a reason behind a symptom. Symptoms are one of the body's main forms of communication. Rather than treating a symptom in isolation, naturopathy looks for the root cause behind illness or dysfunction, because addressing the cause is what allows the body to genuinely heal, not just feel better temporarily.

Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totum)

We don't treat conditions, we treat the person. Two people with the exact same diagnosis can present in completely different ways, because you are not your condition, and you are not your symptoms. Symptoms are signs we use to better understand what's happening in the body. You are not simply a collection of organs and parts, you are one interconnected system, and naturopathy treats you as such.

Doctor As Teacher (Docere)

My ultimate goal is that you leave your final consultation with the tools and knowledge to look after yourself. Education is a core part of naturopathy, understanding the why behind what's happening in your body matters. This can take time, because the body is wonderfully complex, but I always aim to explain what we're doing and why, so you understand your own body better and can make informed choices about your health going forward.

Prevention (Preventare)

Prevention matters because it is so much easier to support a body toward health than it is to treat disease once it has taken hold. In practice, this looks like focusing on the foundations of health so your body is well-supported and resilient, allowing you to live a life you love. It can also mean looking at optimal ranges, not just standard medical reference ranges, when reviewing pathology, so we can catch early signs of imbalance and support the system before it develops into something more.

What Does a Consultation With Sincerely, Serina Look Like?

Every consultation begins with an introduction, where we talk through what naturopathy is and how I personally like to work with you.

From there, we'll go through any supplements or medications you're currently taking. This matters because certain things can interact with one another, and it's important for us to know so we can keep you safe alongside any prescriptions you're on.

We'll then focus in on the one or two things you'd most like support with. From here, expect lots of questions, about the systems connected to those concerns. This might feel a little unrelated at times, for example, being asked about your gut when what you actually came in for is anxiety, but everything in the body is interconnected, and gut health can have a huge influence on mood.

We'll also work through your personal medical history, understanding major events like hospitalisations, illnesses, or diagnoses that give us a clearer picture of your health history, alongside your family health history, which can point to susceptibilities worth being aware of and support a more preventative approach going forward.

A diet diary covering your typical breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and beverages helps us understand what's currently missing or could use more focus nutritionally.

From there, we may also explore your sleep, movement, social connections, and other lifestyle factors that influence your overall health.

Why This Matters

Naturopathy isn't about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all protocols. It's about understanding you, your history, your body, your symptoms, so we can work together to support lasting, sustainable change.

Your body is always communicating with you. Naturopathy is about learning to listen.
