3 Signs Your Gut Health Needs Support

The gut is one of the body’s most interconnected systems, influencing everything from energy production and brain function to immunity, hormone balance, and liver detoxification. Every nutrient we absorb passes through the digestive system, impacting the health of the entire body.

The gut is also home to trillions of microbes that are constantly shaped by diet, stress, sleep, emotions, environment, and lifestyle. Because of this, gut health plays a foundational role in overall wellbeing, resilience, and vitality.

Below are some signs that may suggest your body is asking for extra support and attention, not symptoms to simply dismiss as “normal.”

1. How Many Bowel Motions You Have

Bowel habits can tell us a lot about digestive health. Ideally, bowel motions should occur anywhere from 1–3 times daily and feel complete and easy to pass. Constipation, infrequent motions, urgency, or going multiple times a day can all suggest that digestion, absorption, or the gut microbiome may need support.

2. The Consistency Of Your Stool

The Bristol Stool Chart is a useful tool for assessing digestive function. Ideally, stools should resemble a Type 4, smooth, soft, and sausage-shaped, that are easy to pass and don't require a lot of wiping. Stools that are too hard, loose, watery, or difficult to pass may indicate imbalances within the digestive system, hydration, fibre intake, or gut bacteria.

3. Your Stool Colour

Stool colour can also provide insight into digestive and liver function. A healthy stool is typically medium brown in colour. Very pale, black, yellow, green, or consistently unusual-coloured stools may suggest that digestion, bile flow, or nutrient absorption is not functioning optimally and may warrant further investigation.

Note that a dark black stool may indicate blood is in the stool (internal bleeding), which should be investigated with a health care professional.

Why This Matters

Your body is constantly communicating with you. Signs such as changes in bowel motions, stool consistency, and stool colour can offer valuable insight into what may be happening internally and where the body may need extra support.

When these signs are paired with symptoms like skin flare-ups, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, painful periods, bloating, or simply feeling constantly “off,” it may indicate that gut health is playing a larger role in your overall wellbeing than you realise.

Because the gut is closely connected to the immune system, hormones, nervous system, and inflammation pathways, digestive imbalances can often have effects far beyond the digestive tract itself. Addressing gut health early can help support not only digestion, but also energy, mood, skin, hormonal health, and overall vitality.

Where To Start

Gut health starts with what you eat, which can begin to shift the terrain of your gut and microbiome in as little as 24 hours; however, consistency is where the real, lasting change happens.
